In a nail-biting showdown last Thursday, the 8th grade Valley Center Hornets edged out the Maize South Mavericks 19-16 in a game that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the very last second.
Wilson opened the scoring with a powerful rushing touchdown, putting the Hornets ahead early and setting the tone for what would become an intense battle.
However, the Mavericks weren't going to let the Hornets take control without a fight. The back-and-forth scoring kept the energy high, but it was Caden Spangler who delivered a spectacular moment that would ignite the Hornets. Spangler’s electrifying punt return for a touchdown not only brought the crowd to its feet but also shifted the momentum back to Valley Center, bringing the score to 13-8.
After a Maize South touchdown, with the clock winding down and the game hanging in the balance, the Hornets found themselves in a tense situation. They needed a touchdown to secure the win, and that’s when Isaac Duncan rose to the occasion. With just seconds left on the clock, Duncan connected with Spangler for a game-winning touchdown that sent the Hornets’ bench into a frenzy. The final whistle blew with the score at 19-16, sealing an unforgettable victory for Valley Center.
As the Hornets celebrated their hard-fought victory, their focus quickly shifted to the next challenge: the Derby Panthers, who are set to face off against Valley Center this Thursday. With momentum on their side and confidence growing, the Hornets are eager to build on their success and continue their winning streak.
