Maize South handed the Valley Center Hornets their first loss of the season Tuesday night, edging them 65–60 in a tightly contested matchup.
The Mavericks came out hot from beyond the arc, knocking down five three-pointers in the opening quarter to jump out to a 17–12 lead after one. Both teams traded baskets throughout the second quarter, but Maize South maintained its edge and carried a 33–27 advantage into halftime.
The Hornets showed their resilience in the second half, making several pushes and tying the game three different times. Despite the rallies, Valley Center was unable to grab the lead as Maize South made key plays down the stretch to secure the five-point win.
Ray J. Logan led all scorers with 25 points for the Hornets. Preston Looney and Evan Chavez chipped in nine points apiece, while Cage Newton provided a spark off the bench, knocking down two timely three-pointers to finish with six points.
The Hornets will look to bounce back on Friday night when they return home to take on the undefeated Salina South Cougars.
