The Valley Center Hornets emerged victorious, defeating the Derby team with a final score of 24-14. Even though the Hornets started slow, with a 4-0 lead at the end of the 1st quarter, they maintained their lead throughout the game. By halftime, the Hornets had already established a comfortable lead with a score of 14-0. Their defensive efforts started with a relentless full-court press, which created numerous challenges for the Derby team in the early stages of the game.
The Hornet defense was undoubtedly the star of the night, as they forced an incredible 33 turnovers, with 25 of them being steals. Avery Williams was a standout on the defensive end, amassing an impressive total of 8 steals, while Rachel Garten contributed significantly with 6 steals. Derby's zone defense initially posed a challenge for the Hornets, slowing down their offensive efforts. However, the Valley Center team adjusted, and their excellent ball movement, led by Julia Ensey's 5 assists, allowed them to overcome Derby's defensive strategy. Valley Center also exhibited their prowess in controlling the boards, with a total of 28 rebounds, including an impressive 17 on the offensive glass. Raegan McDonald was particularly active on the boards, grabbing 8 rebounds to help the Hornets maintain possession and limit Derby's opportunities. McDonald led the charge with a game-high 13 points. Rachel Garten chipped in with 7 points. Avery Williams and Makayla L'Ecuyer each contributed 2 points to the team's total.

The Valley Center Middle Schools 8th grade B team won in double overtime vs Derby 19-16! The girls came out and were playing extremely hard in the first half but Derby was running a zone and our shots weren’t falling. So, we ended up heading into halftime down 4 points. The girls came out strong in the second half and scored the first 6 points in what would end up being a back and forth contest the rest of the game. I was proud of the girls resiliency towards the end of the 4th quarter as down by two we got a steal and Miley Dalrymple knocked down two clutch free throws to send it into overtime! The leading scorers for the game were: Lauren Woolsoncroft 6, Miley Dalrymple 5, Gracie Sharon 4, Ana Sandoval 2, Katrina Dixon 2.

Although the Hornets lost 8-25, the team is continuing to make progress, gaining confidence in themselves and each other. Offensively, the team ran the floor well and pushed the ball in transition. The transition offense and the unselfish play of the team led to scoring opportunities. Morgan Fowler, Jerzie Shultz, Kinsley Johnston, and Kelsey Friend each scored two points.

Hornets Take the Win 19-15
In a hard-fought match, the Hornets were victorious with a score of 19-15. Tymlee Alcorn-Mosher’s impressive shooting off the bench proved to be a key factor in the game. Briley Kempf also played exceptionally, performing well defensively and controlling the boards. The team rallied together in the last quarter to hold off a potential comeback. The team appreciates our fans helping them rally in the final minutes as Derby came dangerously close to stealing the win.
