Varsity Volleyball Takes Third at Maize Tournament

The Varsity Volleyball Team placed third at Maize this past weekend, going 3-2 on the day. The Hornets are now 13-7 on the season.

Scores are as follows:
Valley Center vs. Maize: 17-25, 28-26, 17-25 (L)
Valley Center vs. Derby: 25-17, 25-20 (W)
Valley Center vs. Northwest: 20-25, 25-14, 25-18 (W)
Valley Center vs. Kapaun: 22-25, 27-25, 25-27 (L)
Valley Center vs. Maize: 25-23, 25-19 (W)

The team demonstrated lots of aggressive serving throughout the day, with Ava Jacquez, Malia Smith, and Avery Looney going on various serving runs to help give their team the advantage. Although the Hornets did not have the best passing performance, they exhibited a lot of intensity in their matches, blocking well (34 total) and hustling for well placed balls on defense. The girls also mixed up their hitting well, leading to a +.169 hitting percentage on the day.

The Hornets best performances of the day were as follows:
Serve Receive Passing: Malia Smith with a 2.03 serve receive rating
Digging: Malia Smith with 69 total digs
Setting: Avery Looney with 79 total assists
Hitting: Taylor McDonald with 40 total kills and a +.288 hitting percentage
Blocking: Taylor McDonald with 23 total blocks
Serving: Malia Smith with 11 aces and a 2.39 serve rating

The team's player of the week is Abby Anderson (Sr). Abby was voted on by her teammates for her tenacity, optimism, leadership, hard work, and effort throughout the week (and we definitely can't forget her enthusiastic bench high fives). Congrats Abby!

Varsity Volleyball will have their next playing date tomorrow (9/19) at home against Salina Central at 5pm and Andover Central at 7pm. Be sure to come out and support!
