Valley Center High School Volleyball | 9/11/2023

The Varsity Volleyball Team placed second at their home tournament this past weekend, going 3-1 on the day. The Hornets are now 9-4 on the season.

Scores are as follows:
Valley Center vs. Bishop Carroll: 23-25, 25-22, 25-17 (W)
Valley Center vs. Wichita East: 25-16, 25-17 (W)
Valley Center vs. Emporia: 25-19, 24-26, 16-25 (L)
Valley Center vs. Kapaun: 22-25, 25-22, 25-23 (W)

The team showcased several standout moments throughout the day. One highlight was the stellar serve receive performance from back row passers Malia Smith (Libero), Kaylee Kinsinger, and Ava Jacquez, who collectively led the charge for a team 2.10 serve receive rating on the day. Each of these 3 players passed higher than a 2.0, allowing for our setters to have all 3 hitting options on many occasions throughout the day. This consistency allowed for the front row to stay aggressive at the net and have a total of 139 kills over the 4 matches.

Another highlight was the Hornets strong start to the day, beating a previously undefeated Bishop Carroll in three hard-fought sets. The team put the ball down by mixing up their shots and successfully executed a new defense, which highlighted their movement and hustle. Stand out performances for this match include Malia Smith's serving run in the second set (extending the team's lead from 11-10 to 17-10 and ultimately helping to secure the victory) and Anna Duncan's 10 kills and +.500 hitting percentage.

Anna Duncan (Jr.) was also nominated as the Varsity Team's Player of the Week by her teammates for her hard work, positive attitude, and optimism.

Be sure to check back for updates on tomorrow's matches against Ark City and Andover.
