The Valley Center Middle School tennis team opened its season with a strong performance, defeating Maize South Middle School 16-8 in a competitive dual that showcased both veteran leadership and emerging talent.
Top players Jayleen Cabrol and Kaylee Hunter provided steady leadership, not just in competition but in practice leading up to the match. Their encouragement and guidance helped newcomers feel confident stepping onto the court for the first time, a factor that proved important in the Hornets’ overall team success.
Several newcomers also made their mark in their middle school debuts. Kate Stratton impressed with her composure in singles play, while Kendal Merrifield and Evie Taylor each battled through close matches to secure key points for Valley Center. Their success highlighted the team’s depth and potential for the rest of the season.
Returners Evelyn Truman and Abby Booher showed how much they’ve grown since their seventh-grade campaigns. Both displayed stronger serves, improved consistency, and a newfound confidence that helped the Hornets maintain momentum against a talented Maize South squad.
Every player contributed to the team’s 16-8 victory. “We’ve got a great mix of experienced returners and exciting newcomers,” the coaches said. “The leadership from Jayleen and Kaylee in practice, combined with the progress from our eighth graders and the spark from our new players, makes this team a lot of fun to watch.”
With the win, Valley Center begins its season with confidence and momentum as the Hornets look ahead to upcoming matches.s
